How to Use Nature as a Strategy for Spatial Wellbeing?

In a world that is accelerating, drifting away from nature, and creating sterile, artificial environments, biophilic design offers a gentle but powerful resistance. It is not concerned with aesthetics in the narrow sense – but with health, a sense of belonging, and emotional comfort.

In this presentation, I talk about biophilia – the innate human need for contact with nature – and how architects and designers can translate it into space. Through three key principles (direct connection with nature, indirect connection, and spatial experience), I explain how interior design can become a tool to promote health, focus, emotional balance, and overall wellbeing.

Special attention is given to materials: I distinguish between biophilic (natural and tactile) and technologically sustainable ones (recycled and durable), warn about the presence of harmful substances in modern interiors, and provide concrete guidelines for healthier material choices. I also show my own apartment as an example of what not to do – honestly and from experience.

This lecture is not just for architects – but for everyone who shapes space: designers, investors, and even end users who want to live in a healthier and more conscious way. Biophilic design is not a luxury – it is a foundation for living in harmony with nature, and with oneself.
