Above the Stone Horizon
On the edge of Ražanac, in visual dialogue with Mount Velebit, a house emerges – shaped by its context from the very first line.
The challenge was a narrow plot, from which a house with a pool had to “grow”. It was meant to feel both modern and luxurious, yet still respectful of the local architecture of Ražanac and the views toward the sea and the mountains.
The ground floor is anchored to the terrain through stone walls and opens toward the south – living spaces spill into the landscape, and the living room extends onto a shaded loggia and poolside terrace.
Upstairs are three bedrooms, and the volume ends with a simple yet striking gesture: a glass structure leading to the rooftop terrace, seemingly floating above the horizon.
The house is designed as a single residential unit, and in both spatial and material terms, it retains a sense of moderation. The clean concrete edge of the pool contrasts with the rough stone wall, and the playful geometry arises from functional needs – not stylistic whims.
A single-flight staircase leads to the rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the sea and Velebit.
The rooftop addition is formally defined as an “access to the roof”, but it is shaped like a lighthouse — a vertical eye that gazes over the landscape while also regulating daylight within. Though minimal in footprint, this level transforms the house into an ambient platform for contemplation.
Within the constraints of a narrow planning framework and a neighborhood crowded with spatial injustice, this house emerges as a compromise between what is permitted and what is needed – between regulation and poetry.
